Forrest chose to do a science share project about crystals. He grew crystals from a kit and found out information about what crystals are and how they grow. He also made rock candy from sugar crystals. These were a big hit with his class!

This one's not very spring-like, and it was almost dusk, so the picture didn't come out very well. Forrest made a trio of snowmen for our front yard.

Forrest entered a board on crystals in the science share this year. This picture shows him mixing sugar syrup for rock candy (which didn't turn out because Tabor kept wiggling the sticks that the crystals were supposed to grow on; he made other crystals from a science kit).

The very flat squished bunny cake. The icing was a mixture of marshmallow fluff and whipping cream - tasty, but runny.

Alyssa has been painting a mural on Angi's wall because she thought the light blue color was boring. One of her favorite books, Shel Silverstein's The Missing Piece and the Big O, inspired the design.

Visit to Washington

Nope, no house pix yet, but I thought I'd get something updated. We visited Washington state this summer.

Here are some pictures of us at Gasworks Park in Seattle. We had been looking forward to taking Forrest here so he could climb around like Alyssa and Brian used to in college. Ages ago, this park used to appear in all sorts of area guidebooks as a place where you could take your kids to climb. Now all the pipe thingees have notices: "Do not climb." Needless to say, we ignored the new signs, as did most other visitors.

Here we are at the very cool sculpture garden in Seattle. But why would you make public, outdoor sculptures that can't handle being touched? Seems silly.

We also visited Ft. Casey, an old military base that has been made into a state park on Whidbey Island.

We went on lots of hikes.

Alyssa and Forrest visited Alayne and Rich on their boat moored in Friday Harbor. Forrest and Grandpa Rich went looking for shrimp with a flashlight the first night we were there. And they found a biggie!

We sailed to the other end of San Juan Island and anchored in a small bay. There, we paddled around in Nana's inflatable kayak, Red Rider, and used the dinghy to go to English Camp. Forrest's favorite part was swinging from the boom.

Back on the mainland again, we visited Jennifer and Jason and their girls Amelia and Kate. Forrest loved reading to Amelia.

Finally, we said goodbye to Grandpa Tom and Grandma Jeanne.

And Forrest practiced looking winsome so everyone would want to invite him back again.

We have kittens! To be more precise, Angi and Andrew have kittens. They are, of course, absolutely adorable.

Tabor (tay-ber) is the dark one; she's actually chocolate brown with black stripes. She is generally pretty quiet and likes to sleep under the couch. She is not terribly fond of being picked up; she likes to sit beside her people, not on them. She is Angi's cat. Tabor has beautiful blue eyes that make her look perpetually surprised.

Samantha is a more traditional gray tabby stripe. She loves people food, especially chocolate. She races over to clean up brownie crumbs, and bugs you mercilessly if you try to eat anywhere but at the table. She will stand right at your feet and meow to be picked up. Then, she is happiest draped across your shoulder. Samantha is Andrew's cat.

Forrest's 8th Birthday

For Forrest's eighth birthday we hosted a sleepover...

We had a laser maze made of bright green yarn strung with bells and stretched between chairs. The goal was to climb over or under the yarn without touching it so the bells didn't ring.

Of course, there was cake and ice cream. Forrest wanted an Exo-Force theme cake, and we were going crazy trying to figure out how to do it. None of the bakeries had any Exo-Force designs in their theme books, and they wouldn't copy a picture because of copyright law. Forrest finally came up with a brilliant idea: we made cupcakes and each one had a different Exo-Force symbol. He even decorated 4 of the cupcakes himself.

A lot of time at the party was spent putting together Forrest's new Bionicle and Exo-Force Lego sets. Then they played with them. Amazingly, there was a minimum of fighting.

Two boys stayed the whole night. The kids did finally sleep - at about 12:30 - but they were up and eager for pancakes the next morning at 6! Four days later, we're still recovering.

We opened family presents over several days. Now Forrest has lots of books to read and toys to build with.

Brian, Andrew, and Forrest candied up a gingerbread house and their stomachs. Yes, it is on a Halloween plate - that's the only one we had that was big enough. Besides, it lends a bit of irony.

We've had a rather warm autumn, which has allowed Forrest to play outside a lot. He enjoys puddling in the mud at the empty lot that will soon become Toalson Park in our neighborhood. Sometimes he comes home very muddy. We wish we'd gotten a picture of him, but his shoes are shocking enough.
This is what the bathtub looked like after Forrest was done cleaning himself.

Forrest started a blog to educate people about the rain forest and why they should work to protect it. Here he is typing an entry:

This is the last photo ever taken of Mancha. We lost her to renal failure on November 13. In her prime, she weighed 7 pounds; at her vet visit on the Saturday before she died she was down to 3 1/2 pounds. She was all cat: loving, sensitive to her humans' pain, obnoxious, and passive aggressive. We will miss her.

Brian, Andrew, and Angi hung Christmas lights today. (It's 55 degrees and sunny and sure to be much less congenial after Thanksgiving!) Here are the boys on the roof in preparation for putting up the lights.

Grandma Shirley and Grandpa Ernie came to visit for the weekend before Halloween. We went to the pumpkin patch, and, although the rain had made many of them mushy, we found four good pumpkins.

The Feast of the Hunter's Moon

Last weekend we went to the Feast of the Hunter's Moon at Fort Ouiatenon Historic Park in West Lafayette, Indiana.
Forrest tried on clothes from the time period.

He made trades at the kids' trading blanket. Kids purchased a small bag and traded the contents, bag, and string that tied it shut for items they wanted. Forrest's bag had a shell, buckeye, and a round spiky seed pod. He traded for lots of braided ties and a shell necklace:

We went to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago last weekend. It is *huge* and very cool. Forrest really liked the space section.

Wuttke Visit - Anderson Gardens

The Wuttke family - Eric, Jessica, and Quin - visited us last week. Of course, we took them to Anderson Gardens. Quin wasn't very fond of walking on the paths, but he did love the water! He exclaimed over the ducks paddling around in the creek, and really wanted to go swimming with the rather large carp.

Forrest's Nana (Alayne) and Grandpa Rich visited during the week of July 4th. Brian had a friend from work with an old play structure that he wanted to get rid of. We hauled it out of his backyard - and what a sight it was, a giant wooden platform balanced on top of our tiny truck! Nana and Grandpa Rick designed and built add-ons and improvements to the original.

Pompah and Grandma Jeanne (Tom and Jeanne) came to visit us over Forrest's 6th birthday. They helped us with Forrest's party. We also visited Anderson Japanese Gardens

and the Field Museum in Chicago, where we saw Sue (the T rex) and a really cool exhibit on evolution.
Forrest had two grandparents as well as a mother at his school's Mother's Day. He showed us his favorite classroom works, and we ate fruit with chocolate from a chocolate fountain.

Forrest had a rather elaborate birthday party this year, although it was at home. He requested a Scooby-Doo mystery party, so we planned Scooby-Doo on Pirate Island. Brian, appearing as "Pirate Shortbeard" gave the following letter to the participants:
Listen well, ye swabs! I am the ghost of Pirate Shortbeard. Me crew mutinied and stole me treasure, but I shall have the last laugh. Ye swabs have been chosen to quest for me treasure. Follow the clues to find me bones, then capture me to get the key! But if any of you swabs has mutiny in mind, beware! Each must seek the resting place of one clue only.Then ye must assemble all the clues to make a map to me bones. Find them and capture me and I shall give ye the key to me treasure!

Each child was told which room to look in to find a piece of a map. When they each had found their pieces, they put them together like a puzzle to make a complete map, which showed where Pirate Shortbeard was hiding.
When they found him, he chased them in good Scooby-Doo fashion and was caught in a net (thoughtfully manned by Pompah and Grandma Jeanne). The captured pirate relinquished his key to a treasure chest. The chest, when opened, contained a pinata filled with waaaaay too much candy.

It's been a long time since we updated this blog, mostly because we had very intermittent and unreliable Internet service for a month as our Internet provider updated its software.

Forrest started taking karate classes at the Y. He seems to enjoy it, and we bought him a uniform. This summer we'll practice as a family; we're gone or entertaining visitors too often to make attending (and paying for!) class practical.
Forrest is adopting (bad?) habits from his parents.

Grandparents Visit

Forrest's grandparents made a quick trip from Lincoln during the last weekend of March. We took them around town and showed them our new home, including one of Forrest's favorite places, the Discovery Center.

Forrest has developed a major fascination with the camera. He took the above portrait of his grandparents (note the extreme upward angle) and the picture of Alyssa raking leaves in the previous post. He also took about 50 other pictures, which makes us very glad that we have a digital camera and don't have to pay for developing film.

As you can tell from the second photo, Forrest continues to be fascinated with costumes of just about any type. Usually he assembles his costumes from a variety of sources, which makes them quite eclectic and definitely creative.

Spring is Here!

Grandma Jeanne sent Forrest some spring cookie cutters and icing, so we spent a day over spring break making and icing sugar cookies.

Then we had to knuckle down and clean up the yard. We raked and bagged 5 bags-worth of leftover fall leaves. Luckily, leaf pickup is included in the garbage fee here. Yes, this is our backyard. It's absolutely gigantic. The previous owners left a small built-in sandbox and planted several tulip and daffodil bulbs (glad we didn't spend our Thanksgiving on that, Megan!).

On Tuesday, January 24, Forrest's school, Montessori Learning Path, hosted their Dad's Day. All dads were invited for a cowboy themed event, where they ate chili and watched their children work. Forrest was especially excited about dressing up as a cowboy, athough a fedora was the closest we could come to a cowboy hat. He dictated the following composition about his father to one of his teachers: He works and does cool stuff on the body. We like to go swimming at the park. We love to spend time together at the Y. I love my dad!

We finally figured out what we're going to do with our cabinets in the kitchen. Several of the upper ones have glass fronts, and the previous owners had some rather cutsey fabric (coordinating with the *bright* yellow doors) adorning the shelves. Forrest, however, is not eager for us to pick a shelf liner and load the cabinets, because then he couldn't do this:

Snow Day

We got quite a bit of snow on Friday. Forrest and Brian went sledding Saturday. It was great, but I (Forrest) didn't like the jump on the first try. We went to really just two big mountains. One of them had a jump; one of them was not as steep as the other. The steep one was so steep that you needed a rail there just to get up. Good thing they put one there.
Forrest and Brian made a snow fort and a snowman Sunday. We built a snowman first. We made a big ball, then made it bigger by rolling it. We rolled a second ball, then a third, which was the head. And then then we put on the face parts. We used a carrot for a nose. We used leaves for eyes. Then we built the snow fort out of even bigger balls. And they were more ball-ish. We moved them into place by rolling them.
